'Best of Boston 2012' design work by Jordan Metcalf

This work really caught my eye because of the lighting effects created for the typography. I think it jumps out of the page and gives the feel of being outside. I would like to explore the use of shadow in my project as I feel it could be relevant to my project.

Blink Magazine - design work by Yomesubo

Another example of magazine design that I came across on the Behance Network.
I love the stamp style of the first two images. It is quite different to what you would find in a magazine, adding class by taking out much of the detail and complexity that you would normally find here. The black and white colour scheme completes it, and over all it looks like a piece of branding or a logo.

I really like these examples, especially the second one. I found the photo editing (sections of negative and positive) to be really original and something that I would like to explore in my own project. It really makes a change from using standard photos throughout a magazine spread. The bottom left image has a fluorescent blue background instead of black or white, yet still uses black ink, creating a very vivid feel to the page - almost like a block print.

Again I was really inspired by the examples above. The illustrative work in this photo is really effective and again, something I have not seen before in a magazine. I will definitely look to use this in my project. I also found the typography design in the first photo interesting, the different shapes and textures really convey the meaning and mirror the photo that is printed next to it.

Cream Magazine design work by Yomesubo

I was looking through the Behance Network and this caught my eye. I am aware that the subject matter doesn't necessarily fit with that of my own project, but some of the details have really inspired me.

I love how the full-page photographs are contrasted by the simplicity of the black on white (or vice versa) text in these examples. I also noticed how the choice of font reflects the shapes found in the photograph. In the example above, the curves and hourglass shapes created by the bowtie are mirrored by the thick, rolling silhouette of the type.

In these examples, I was drawn towards the symmetry of each page - especially in the photography.

The examples above show double page spreads where both pages contain imagery. I really love the contrast in the example above. The yellow and blue almost looks like a negative that is really exciting to look at.

This magazine has been printed using fluorescent ink to really produce a cutting pink colour. Coupled with the black background, it really stands out more than I have ever seen in a magazine. I really like this set of examples; the photoset has a limited colour palette, yet there are accents of pink that add warmth. You can almost see underneath the fluorescent ink that there are shapes printed in the background. I think that the limited amount of type and the signature at the bottom of the cover add personality, making it look less like a publication and more like a piece of photography.

'Resort Type' - Jing Zhang

I saw this example on The Behance Network and the way that each letter is resort-themed instantly made me think of adventure holidays. I think that the combination of the wood texture, coloured accents, and 3D composition gives the image a sense of movement that really makes it visually stimulating.

'Catalan Wines' - Promotional material by Toormix

"Branding, graphic and communication code for a catalan wines promotion project for the domestic and international audience. A project that aims to improve the consumption and the presence of the local wines at catalan cellars and restaurants."

This example interests me because of the way the designer has created motifs for each region from the shape of the land on a map. I can relate this to my project because it would be a good way to capture the personality of a mountain biking resort and incorporate it into branding or promotion. I think that this would be a good way to create a final outcome that really reflects the qualities of the bike park and links parks together whilst keeping the style similar.
