Travel - Mountain Biking Holidays
My aim is to create a company specializing in holidays for mountain biking, and create the promotional material for an annual mountain biking event with links to the holiday company, and a magazine feature for the event. I have chosen mountain biking because I used to be interested in it and have a lot of primary resources to use. I also wanted to choose something that was a bit different and not just a normal holiday company.
I am interested in the illustrative techniques that I used in previous projects, such as lino-printing and stenciling, so I am looking to develop these in my Unit 3 project. I think that the illustrative side of each project has been my strong point and one of my favourite parts of a project, therefore I am going to use this heavily throughout the task; I think that this will give me lots of scope for development and varying my designs.
The target audience of a mountain biking holiday would mostly be males bewteen the age of 20 and 50. This is quite a large age range, as mountain biking is a sport that isnt very age age dependent. I will need to make my designs unisex and appropriate for any age. I dont think that this will be too much of a problem regardless as a well designed poster can attract the eye of any passer-by.
My initial research has come from many sources. I have looked at magazines from my collection from 2007/8, as well as magazines that have recently been released. This has given me a vast wealth of photographic resources, as well as examples of magazine layout and cover design. I have looked through various design books to find examples of poster design that interests me, as well as any aspects of the imagery that I find inspirational. I intend to use holiday brochures for extra research and even websites of existing companies and holiday resorts.
From looking through books, I have found a few designers that have stood out and fitted nicely with my ideas. 'Little Friends of Printmaking' are a poster design company. I really like the style of their work as it is quite illustrative, fun and quirky and I feel that these qualities would be exciting in my final outcome. I have also looked at the work of 'Aesthetic Apparel', a company specializing in screen-printed concert posters. A lot of examples by this design company have very intricate design work printed over bold block-colour backgrounds - again something that would be a great feature for my outcome. The work of Chris Capuozzo also caught my attention as his mixed media approach towards illustration creates an outcome that tells a story through images, and creates a sense of movement.
I would like to incorporate lots of practical illustrative techniques into this project, not only because I enjoy them but because I think that designing for a very hands on sport requires a very hands on approach itself. This may include lino-printing, creating wash background with paint, creating background textures with paint, stencilling block shapes or typography, spray painting, and using a range of physical textures digitally to create a third dimension to a design.
I have decided that possible outcomes for my project may include promotional posters for an annual event, along with a magazine cover feature to document it, or the branding for a holiday resort specializing in mountain biking holidays that host an annual event. This could also include design for any product used by the holiday company such as letterheads, tickets, a website, promotion, signage and a holiday brochure.
